FCI Chastised

Recently a very good friend who I used to camp with in the California Mojave desert sent me an email asking for update information on the bill that Senator Feinstein had submitted to make the .50 BMG an NFA weapon that requires registration. His comments to me were to the effect, 'hey, we haven't heard anything from you guys over at FCI for awhile, what's up?' I apologize to 50Shooter and to everyone else for us not being a little more attentive to our duties. It's not that we aren't busy over here, but immediate legislative issues facing the fifty caliber community have gone the same way most other serious firearms related issues have. They're off the radar for now!! It is my supposition the presidential candidates have put the word out they don't want "Guns" on the table for debate during this coming presidential election cycle and have quietly put the word out to table those bills in several committees around the country until a better opportunity presents itself. So, since they started campaigning 21 months early some serious challenges to our sport have literally disappeared for awhile. That doesn't mean we're safe by any means, but it does mean we have some time to work on those states where we face serious challenges. And, that's what we've been doing.

However, being busy doesn't mean we can't take time out to communicate with our supporters and we will try to do a much better job of keeping everyone up to speed on what we know and hear. To answer 50Shooter's question S.1331, the "Long-Range Sniper Rifle Safety Act of 2007" is particularly onerous because the bill requires registering the .50 BMG as an NFA weapon like a machinegun. Feinstein is from a state that doesn't allow NFA weapons even though her bill calls for a 'grandfather clause' that should allow all current owners to register their guns legally. There are many other states that will not allow NFA weapons to be owned too and she knew that when she submitted her bill with the phrase, "it is not our intent to ban these guns"!!

Another aspect of Senator Feinstein's bill that we are beginning to see more often is an attack on firearms based on 'muzzle energy created'. In her bill she would restrict ownership of the .50 BMG and any firearm that develops muzzle energy of more than 12,500 ft lbs of energy. At this time there are several wildcat cartridges based on the .50 BMG case that would be restricted also. This bill is very similar to the bill in New Jersey that seeks to ban the 50 BMG by redefining what a 'destructive device' is. In NJ, a destructive device has traditionally followed the guidelines established by the federal gov't., but the bill in NJ this year would define any device 50 caliber or over as being a destructive device. For more information on both of these bills please check out the FCI website at: www.fiftycal.org

Fifty Caliber World Championships

The smoke has finally cleared from the fifty caliber World Championship match held by the Fifty Caliber Shooter's Assn., Inc. (FCSA) at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, NM over the 4th of July week. What an incredible match it was!! Records fell everywhere and once again we were treated to a display of shooting by many shooters including Lee Rasmussen and his wife Sherri and from our good friend Mark Avakian. It was a sight to behold. No quarter was asked and no quarter was given by all of the competitors and it was an honor just to be there and share good times with a lot of great shooters from all across this great country. If you are a member of FCSA you should be able to go over to the FCSA website at:
www.fcsa.org and the match results will be posted there soon. The next issue of the VHP magazine will contain complete coverage of the events at the match.

From Barry Hamilton; President of the South Central Shooters Club

We had a very good turn out of SCSC members at the FCSA World Championships in Raton, NM this year. Thirteen SCSC club members, including 2 juniors competed with many of them taking home several awards

and plaques. Reid Woodward led the SCSC "Barbeque Team" of Bryan McCann, Dayton McCann, Barry and Owen Hamilton, plus lots of help from volunteers who, in between shooting, managed to put on a feed of pork ribs, sausage, corn and some smoked muscles/cheese snacks for every meal, including the Annual Members Meeting.

This was all done for donations to raise funds for the South Central Shooters Club goal of buying a club rifle and some equipment as we always get people who show up and watch. We can now encourage more potential 50 enthusiasts to join us and shoot, before they go out and buy a rifle.

None of this would have been possible without the generosity of Reid and Bryan supplying all the food that was cooked over the entire week. With everyone's donations towards the barbeque, we raised a combined total of $520. We also raised another $710 from the raffle that was

conducted, with prizes also being donated by Bryan and Reid. Between the two of them they donated a Sinclair Bipod, (in great demand as they are no longer produced) a Federson .50 caliber rifle barrel and a Dillon Tumbler and separator kit.

Finally, a donation to the club of $100 by our new President Bob Kissling brought our total to $1330 of contributions for SCSC. We are now a long ways down the road towards buying our first rifle for SCSC. We all need to thank Reid Woodward and Bryan McCann for once again stepping up to the plate in magnificent fashion to contribute to the growth of a sport they both love and respect. We would also like to thank everyone who supported this worthy cause by making the donations for food and participating in the fundraising raffles. (Barry Hamilton)

Rocky Mountain Fifty Caliber Shooter's Association (RMFCSA)

Over the weekend of May 3rd - 6th this year, Bob McBride President of the Rocky Mountain Fifty Caliber Shooters Assn. (RMFCSA) hosted his annual machinegun shoot up near Cheyenne Wells in Colorado. This is an event Richard Murray & I attend each year because it is the biggest event like it sponsored anywhere in the USA. In addition to being the biggest event, it is the best organized and safest event we go to. I'm going to share a few photos of some of the participants here with all of you for the purpose of making you aware of what you're missing by not attending. I like to encourage events like the one Bob hosts and I think we need to support the ones that exist now. If you are interested in more information on this event call Bob McBride at: (303) 934-1915 or email him at
