FCI Chastised
Recently a very good friend who I used to camp with in the
California Mojave desert sent me an email asking for update information on the
bill that Senator Feinstein had submitted to make the .50 BMG an NFA
weapon that requires registration. His comments to me were to the effect, 'hey,
we haven't heard anything from you guys over at FCI for awhile, what's
up?' I apologize to 50Shooter and to everyone else for us not being
a little more attentive to our duties. It's not that we aren't busy
over here, but immediate legislative issues facing the fifty caliber community have gone
the same way most other serious firearms related issues have. They're off the
radar for now!! It is my supposition the presidential candidates have put the
word out they don't want "Guns" on the table for debate during this
coming presidential election cycle and have quietly put the word out to table
those bills in several committees around the country until a better opportunity presents
itself. So, since they started campaigning 21 months early some serious challenges to
our sport have literally disappeared for awhile. That doesn't mean we're safe by
any means, but it does mean we have some time to work on
those states where we face serious challenges. And, that's what we've been doing.
However, being busy doesn't mean we can't take time out to communicate with
our supporters and we will try to do a much better job of
keeping everyone up to speed on what we know and hear. To answer
50Shooter's question S.1331, the "Long-Range Sniper Rifle Safety Act of 2007" is particularly
onerous because the bill requires registering the .50 BMG as an NFA weapon
like a machinegun. Feinstein is from a state that doesn't allow NFA weapons
even though her bill calls for a 'grandfather clause' that should allow all
current owners to register their guns legally. There are many other states that
will not allow NFA weapons to be owned too and she knew that
when she submitted her bill with the phrase, "it is not our intent
to ban these guns"!!
Another aspect of Senator Feinstein's bill that we are beginning to see more
often is an attack on firearms based on 'muzzle energy created'. In her
bill she would restrict ownership of the .50 BMG and any firearm that
develops muzzle energy of more than 12,500 ft lbs of energy. At this
time there are several wildcat cartridges based on the .50 BMG case that
would be restricted also. This bill is very similar to the bill in
New Jersey that seeks to ban the 50 BMG by redefining what a
'destructive device' is. In NJ, a destructive device has traditionally followed the guidelines
established by the federal gov't., but the bill in NJ this year would
define any device 50 caliber or over as being a destructive device. For
more information on both of these bills please check out the FCI website

This was all done for donations to raise funds for the South
Central Shooters Club goal of buying a club rifle and some equipment
as we always get people who show up and watch. We can
now encourage more potential 50 enthusiasts to join us and shoot, before
they go out and buy a rifle.
None of this would have been possible without the generosity of Reid
and Bryan supplying all the food that was cooked over the entire
week. With everyone's donations towards the barbeque, we raised a combined total
of $520. We also raised another $710 from the raffle that was
